Meet Our Transformative Partner Award Honoree

Catalyst California is honored to present the Transformative Partner Award to Pete White and LA CAN for decades of challenging work to improve the lives of Los Angeles’ unhoused residents. As a racial equity organization, we understand that economic and political conditions disproportionately and negatively impact people of color, resulting in a high rate of houselessness. His work has revealed this injustice and creatively pushed, pulled, and tackled policymakers and elected officials to change the way they think about and respond to this human crisis. We have a long way to go yet on this issue, but we have made it this far because of LA CAN’s advocacy. Catalyst California is proud to call Pete White and the members of LA CAN partner on several of our initiatives.

LA CAN is a grassroots organization formed in 1999 that ensures the human right to housing, health and security are upheld in Los Angeles. Pete White has been a community organizer in Los Angeles communities since 1992 and has educated and organized thousands of low-income people on a multitude of issues and campaigns. A lifetime resident of South Central Los Angeles, he is committed to fighting for a Los Angeles that does not tolerate racial injustice, promotes an equitable distribution of resources, and includes everyone. Pete believes that organizing and leadership development are essential tools needed to achieve social change and racial justice.

He serves on a variety of Boards and Advisory Committees related to homelessness, organizing, and grassroots funding. He often appears as a guest lecturer and dispenses knowledge and community organizing techniques to students throughout the country.
