Our democracy demands we count all votes.

The 2020 election was always going to be one for the history books, held in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic and with enormously consequential questions for California’s racial equity agenda on the ballot. Unprecedented turnout and unprecedented circumstances mean that even more so than in any other year, it’s critical to ensure that every single vote is counted.

This means waiting to know the voters’ judgment on Proposition 15, which promises to close unjust commercial property tax loopholes and bring $12B in new funding to our schools, cities, and counties.  We stand today in deep gratitude to our partners – the community organizers, advocates, and labor unions that carried this bold agenda forward, and also delivered crucial victories that we don’t need to wait to celebrate:

  • The defeat of Proposition 20 means California will not go backward on the path of criminal justice reform. Instead, we can continue to advance a positive agenda that recognizes the failures of our racist system of over-incarceration and supports communities.
  • In Los Angeles, voters resoundingly endorsed Measure J. The initiative will direct at least 10% of the county’s local revenues toward investments to support our communities – including housing and renter supports, access to capital for Black-owned businesses, youth development programs, and alternatives to incarceration.

We congratulate our partners on everything they’ve accomplished and stand ready to work with you to ensure these victories, and those to come, will deliver concrete results for California’s low-income communities of color.
