Advancement Project California honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s. visionary leadership and legacy of activism for racial justice. As a civil rights organization, our work is made possible because of the timeless contributions of leaders like Dr. King in the collective fight for dignity and diversity. We believe in the power of community organizing and know that coming together over the shared values of justice and compassion can and will win against a rising-tide of race-based hatred.

Our office is closed on Monday, January 15th. Instead of coming to Echo Park, many of us here at Advancement Project California will be exploring our beautiful city and the many happenings that honor Dr. King’s gift to the civil rights movement and society as a whole.

Here are a few happenings that we encourage you to check out! (via RedTri, LeTania Kirkland Smith)

  1. Make your way over to the California African American Museum for their annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. There will be a discussion about women activists during the civil rights movement, a study of Dr. King’s speeches, along with children’s activities.
  2. The 33rd Annual King Day Parade is the largest parade in the nation in celebration of Dr. King. The theme this year is “When They Go Low, We Go High.” (some members of our team will be joining our friends at Community Coalition!)
  3. Long Beach will be celebrating with their annual Peace and Unity Parade and Celebration.
  4. On Jan. 13 the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra will celebrate with a Martin Luther King Weekend Concert.
  5. LACMA will be hosting a free day on Monday, Jan. 15 so you can celebrate dreams and diversity through art. The museum will be offering bilingual tours, family activities and live music.
  6. The Autry Museum is hosting a La Raza Exhibition. La Raza was a bilingual newspaper published from 1967-1977 and was influential in the Chicano Rights Movement. While this exhibition doesn’t focus on Dr. King, the Chicano movement was most definitely influenced by his work.
  7. The Pasadena MLK Community Coalition will be hosting a series of events leading up to their annual MLK Day Celebration on Jan. 15.
  8. The Kidspace Children’s Museum for Unity Days is honoring Dr. King by hosting several events all weekend.
  9. Children’s Book World will be hosting two book signings on Saturday, Jan. 13 in honor of equality. Roda Ahmed will present her book Mae Among the Stars, all about young Mae Jemison who would become the first African-American woman to travel in space, and Vashti Harrison will present Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History which covers abolitionist Sojourner Truth, pilot Bessie Coleman, and more.
  10. The National Park service is opening its doors for free on MLK Day.
